Ruva Nutrition is a Manchester-based nutrition consultancy founded and directed by a Specialist Dietitian and Registered Associate Nutritionist Odul Turkay. With this company, Odul will provide her clients with nutrition consulting services helping them overcome their eating challenges and achieve their personal health goals. The scope of her business offering covers areas such as nutrition counseling, meal planning programs, promoting healthy eating habits, large-scale meal planning, and performing nutrition screenings.

She aims to work hard to meet and surpass all of her clients’ expectations as it relates to their career and personal goals whenever they hire her services guided by her values and professional ethics.

My Story

Meet Odul Turkay, Nutritionist

She earned her Bachelor of Science (BS) in Nutrition and Dietetics from Baskent University in Ankara, Turkey. The program at Baskent provided a broad overview of the Nutrition and Dietetics field. She gained many experiences during her bachelor’s degree. She worked in many different departments including, heart disease, gastroenterology, eating disorder, diabetes, cancer, intensive care, children disease, catering and woman health in order to understand a nutritionist perspective better. Her experiences support her in her professional life. 

Furthermore, she continued her education with MSc in Global Health at Queen Mary University of London in London, UK. She studied on some modules which are Health Inequalities and the social determinants of health, and health systems, policy and practice that helped her to raise her awareness in a global health environment. This program has enabled her to analyze health systems profoundly, and she has found an opportunity to combine her nutritional skills with global health-related issues in the international environment.

She travelled mostly in Europe and gained many cultural experiences. She had plenty of clients in a different culture; therefore, she has the skill to manage different cultural aspects and enjoy with it.

She closely follows the latest developments in the field. She is a member of the Association for Nutrition as a Registered Associate Nutritionist and some nutritional organizations. She is developing herself by professional courses, certificates and conferences. Therefore, she, with expert knowledge in nutrition, is well equipped and has a strong network to provide the best service in the field of nutrition.

Her primary approach is to make people’s diet a lifestyle for them with a culturally sensitive framework. She also makes individual nutrition plans to keep people healthy. She analyzes the client’s lifestyle and personal preferences to prepare for proper meal plans. She prefers to add food instead of taking them out so, she provides training to her customers to choose and prepare healthy food. After counseling, people learn how to consume food and adapt it to their lives.

What is the best diet for losing weight?

The diet has to be specific for each individual. After your medical history, nutritional needs, and goals will be evaluated, you and your nutritionist have to decide which diet plan is the best for you.

What are the differences between a vegan diet or a plant-based diet?

Both meal plans are the same, but there are some differences. Vegan diets; ignores all animal products, including milk, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and honey but, a plant-based diet does not remove all animal products; people decide which animal products to consume. Plant-based diets mainly consist of foods such as fruits, whole grains, vegetables, and nuts.

What is the gluten-free diet? Is it bad or good for me?

If you have celiac disease or FODMAP intolerance, in this case, you need to remove gluten from your life. You must get to know on your body. The most important thing to remember is that most grains are rich in vitamins and minerals and they are an excellent source of fiber so, test it before removing it from your diet and determine if they are right for your body.

What should I eat pre and post-workout?

This question depends on who is asking. Nutritionists need to optimize each clients' workout nutrition-based goals, exercise type, exercise time. For example, it even depends on if you are professional athletes or non-athletes. Because train athletes need to consume different amounts of macronutrients pre and post-workout.

Should I avoid carbs?

The carbs are not our enemy. Many people achieve a better body composition to consume the proper amount and sources of carbs. The essential thing is which carb sources you take.

How important is vitamin D?

Vitamin D maintains plasma calcium by controlling absorption and excretion. Moreover, vitamin D promotes bone growth. It would also help for your other essential body functions if you had enough vitamin D in your body. Lack of Vitamin D has severe damage in bones such as soft bones (rickets) in children and misshapen bones (osteomalacia) in adults. Vitamin D deficiency has now been linked to cancers such as breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer, as well as heart disease, depression, and gain weight.
